Kenya's illicit alcohol sector reached an estimated value of Sh160 billion in 2024, with significant tax revenue losses and widespread counterfeit products driving the market, according to recent data from Euromonitor International.

The report breaks down the illicit alcohol market into several categories based on volume measured in high-level alcohol equivalent (HL LAE):

  • Tax leakage: The largest segment, accounting for approximately 73 billion litres HL LAE.
  • Counterfeit and illicit brands: Close behind, with about 64 billion litres HL LAE.
  • Traditional alcoholic beverages: Representing roughly 770,000 litres HL LAE.
  • Smuggling and contraband: The smallest volume at an estimated 80,000 litres HL LAE but notable for generating illicit sales valued at Sh23 billion.

These figures underscore the magnitude of Kenya’s illicit alcohol trade and the substantial economic impact caused by products that evade taxation, imitate established brands, or enter through illegal channels.

Authorities continue to prioritize combating this challenge, increasing enforcement against illegal producers, distributors, and sellers. Government initiatives are also focusing on reducing the availability of unsafe and unregulated alcoholic beverages to protect public health and recover lost tax revenues.
