Kenya Launches Data-Driven Strategy to Boost Climate-Resilient Irrigation and Water Storage

Kenya is advancing its efforts to expand climate-resilient irrigation and improve water resource management through the integration of data and digital technology. This approach aims to guide investment decisions and enhance agricultural productivity in the face of climate change.
Innovative Water Management Tool
During World Water Week 2026 in Stockholm, Secretary for Land Reclamation, Climate Resilience and Irrigation Water Management, Tanui Joel, highlighted the government's commitment to using the Water Availability and Demand (WAD) Tool. This digital platform combines satellite data, water accounting, and spatial analysis to provide detailed insights on water availability, agricultural demand, crop patterns, and water storage potential.
The WAD Tool was developed through a collaboration between the National Irrigation Authority (NIA), the International Water Management Institute (IWMI), and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). It is designed to assist policymakers and planners in matching water supply with demand, ensuring that irrigation and storage projects are sustainable and strategically located.
Addressing Climate and Agricultural Challenges
Kenya’s push to increase irrigated land responds to erratic rainfall and climate variability that threaten agricultural productivity. By reducing dependency on rainfall, irrigation offers farmers more reliable income sources and boosts food security.
Simultaneously, the government is prioritizing the expansion of water storage infrastructure to enhance resilience against climate shocks. However, managing water resources remains complex due to competing demands from households, industries, and ecosystems.
Data-Driven Investment Decisions
Accurate and timely water data is critical for effective resource allocation. The WAD Tool facilitates evidence-based decisions by identifying areas where water availability can support long-term irrigation projects. This approach aims to optimize investments and safeguard water resources.
Since its official handover to the National Irrigation Authority in January 2026, the tool has been integrated into national water and irrigation planning frameworks, marking a significant step towards digitizing water governance in Kenya.
As Kenya continues to invest in irrigation and water storage, leveraging technology and reliable data will be central to building sustainable agricultural systems and enhancing climate resilience.
