The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has forecast predominantly dry weather across most parts of the country from August 18 to 24, with daytime temperatures exceeding 30°C in several regions.
Counties anticipated to experience temperatures above 30°C include Kilifi, Tana River, Lamu, Garissa, Wajir, Isiolo, Marsabit, Turkana, eastern Kitui, Bungoma, Busia, and Kakamega. Nighttime temperatures are expected to dip below 10°C in areas such as Meru, Tharaka-Nithi, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Nyeri, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nakuru, Narok, Kajiado, and Trans Nzoia.
Scattered Showers and Cloud Cover
While dry conditions prevail, KMD predicts rainfall in some counties including Bungoma, Trans Nzoia, Nakuru, Uasin Gishu, Kisii, Lamu, Kericho, Nyandarua, and Nyeri. Morning showers may also occur in coastal counties like Kwale, Mombasa, Kilifi, Tana River, and Lamu.
Afternoon showers and thunderstorms are likely in parts of Bungoma, Trans Nzoia, Uasin Gishu, Busia, Kakamega, Vihiga, Nandi, Kericho, Nakuru, Narok, Migori, Homa Bay, Bomet, Elgeyo/Marakwet, Siaya, Kisumu, Kisii, Nyamira, and West Pokot.
Intermittent cloudiness is expected in counties such as Nairobi, Embu, Kiambu, Kirinyaga, Laikipia, Meru, Murang’a, Nyandarua, Nyeri, Tharaka-Nithi, Nakuru, Machakos, Kajiado, and Marsabit.
Temperature Extremes and Regional Highlights
- Lodwar and Mandera could reach daytime highs of 37°C, with minimum temperatures around 24-25°C.
- Garissa and Wajir are forecast to hit 35°C during the day, cooling to low twenties at night.
- Kisumu and Kakamega will experience highs of 32°C and 30°C respectively, with nighttime lows between 14°C and 17°C.
- Nairobi's temperatures will range between 8°C and 28°C, while Nyahururu and Narok will have cooler nights around 6-7°C.
- Coastal cities like Mombasa and Lamu will see daytime temperatures of 31°C and 32°C respectively.
Recent Rainfall Patterns
Between August 10 and 16, most parts of Kenya remained dry, though some counties recorded rainfall. Kericho meteorological station reported the highest weekly total of 64.0mm, including 40.7mm in a single day on August 12. Increased rainfall was noted in Kisii, Nakuru, Uasin Gishu, and Nyamira, while Lamu, Kilifi, and Trans Nzoia saw declines.
