Kenya Breweries Limited (KBL), a subsidiary of East African Breweries PLC, has officially opened its sorghum sourcing programme ahead of the upcoming planting season. The initiative targets commercial farmers, aggregators, and smallholder farmers across Kenya's traditional sorghum-growing counties.

Pricing and Eligibility

KBL has introduced differentiated pricing to cater to various supplier categories:

  • Commercial farmers and aggregators delivering white sorghum directly to Nairobi or Kisumu will receive KSh 52 per kilogram.
  • Red or brown sorghum will fetch KSh 50 per kilogram in the same categories.
  • Smallholder farmers, who supply sorghum through appointed aggregators, are expected to receive minimum prices of KSh 43 per kilogram for white sorghum and KSh 41 for red sorghum at aggregation points.

To qualify as a commercial farmer, applicants must own at least 10 acres of land with valid title deeds. Aggregators should be recognized by county governments and demonstrate capacity to manage purchase points and logistics. Smallholders are capped at 10 acres and will deliver produce to aggregators within their counties.

Sustainability and Inclusion

KBL emphasizes commitment to sustainable and ethical farming practices, including environmental protection and fair labor standards. The company also encourages participation from women and persons with disabilities, aligning with EABL's 'Spirit of Progress' strategy.

Program Background and Technology

The programme builds on prior efforts, including a KSh 35 million partnership with CARE International aimed at empowering farmers in western Kenya. KBL has engaged over 30,000 farmers in counties such as Kisumu, Busia, Homa Bay, Siaya, Migori, and recently Kakamega.

Additionally, KBL has implemented the Farmforce mobile application to enable real-time tracking of contracted sorghum, eliminating manual paperwork.

Application Process

Interested commercial farmers and aggregators must submit an Expression of Interest by 4 September 2026 at 5:00 pm. The application form is available on the EABL website and should be sent via email to kenyabreweries@eabl.com. Smallholder farmers will be registered directly by KBL representatives within their counties. No fees are required to apply or onboard.

Additional Details

All sorghum supplied under this programme must be grown in Kenya, with proof of origin mandatory before acceptance. Sorghum crops mature in 85 to 120 days and can produce between 8 and 20 bags per acre, offering a viable farming option in semi-arid regions.
