Kenya and Qatar have agreed to institutionalise annual Bilateral Political Consultations, signaling a commitment to deepen diplomatic engagement and expand cooperation across various sectors.
The agreement emerged from the inaugural consultations led by Kenya's Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Sing’Oei and Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs Secretary General Ahmed bin Hassan Al Hammadi. These talks provided a platform to evaluate current partnerships and explore new economic and diplomatic opportunities.
Key Areas of Cooperation
- Trade and Investment: Kenya invited Qatar to increase investments in renewable energy, agriculture, infrastructure, logistics, tourism, and Special Economic Zones. Additionally, Qatar was urged to participate in Kenya’s $200 million Green Investment Fund targeting sustainable development.
- Labour Mobility: Both countries agreed to expedite negotiations on revising the 2012 Bilateral Labour Agreement, supporting the over 70,000 Kenyans working in Qatar.
- Agricultural Market Access: Discussions focused on easing restrictions on Kenyan meat exports, with technical teams from both sides committed to finding mutually acceptable solutions.
- Aviation: The expanding partnership between Kenya Airways and Qatar Airways was highlighted, with plans to enhance air connectivity and cargo services.
- People-to-People Links: Cooperation in education, youth affairs, sports, and tourism was emphasized to strengthen ties beyond diplomacy and trade.
- Multilateral Cooperation: Both nations agreed to maintain close coordination on international issues of mutual interest.
Looking Ahead
The second round of these consultations is scheduled for 2027 in Nairobi, where progress will be reviewed and new areas for collaboration identified. This institutionalised framework aims to ensure continuous dialogue, monitor bilateral agreements, and foster stronger economic and diplomatic relations between Kenya and Qatar.
