At least seven people lost their lives while several others were seriously injured after a matatu carrying approximately 50 passengers veered off the road and rolled multiple times in Makueni County.

The accident happened at Kalembwani in Nzakika Ward as the vehicle was travelling from Nthongoni in Kibwezi towards Katulye, where the passengers were headed to attend a dowry ceremony.

According to the Kenya Red Cross, the matatu lost control in the Muamba area before rolling several times and trapping some passengers inside the vehicle.

Emergency Response

A coordinated rescue effort involving Kenya Red Cross volunteers, the County Disaster Management unit, and Kenya Police was swiftly deployed to the scene. Injured survivors were promptly evacuated and taken to Makueni County Referral Hospital for medical treatment.

Investigation Underway

Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the crash. At the time of reporting, it was unclear what led the driver to lose control of the vehicle.

Makueni County has experienced numerous fatal road accidents in recent years, with overloading and poor road infrastructure often cited as contributing factors.
