Kamukunji MP Yusuf Hassan Joins Rigathi Gachagua’s Democracy for Citizens Party

Kamukunji Member of Parliament Yusuf Hassan Abdi has officially left the Jubilee Party to join the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), led by Rigathi Gachagua. The announcement was made at a DCP event held at the party’s Nairobi headquarters on August 25, 2026.

Yusuf Hassan, who has represented Kamukunji under Jubilee, declared his intention to vie for a third term as MP on the DCP ticket. He also pledged support for Gachagua’s 2027 presidential campaign.

Yusuf Hassan stated: "We are now in DCP, and we have decided to support Rigathi Gachagua in his 2027 Presidential ambitions."

This move adds Yusuf Hassan to a growing list of prominent Nairobi politicians abandoning Jubilee for DCP. Other notable defectors include Embakasi East MP Mark Mwenje and Starehe MP Amos Mwago. Their departures have left Nairobi County without Jubilee parliamentary candidates ahead of the upcoming general elections.

In addition to MPs, several Nairobi Jubilee Members of County Assembly (MCAs) also joined DCP during the event. The Nairobi County Jubilee Chairman was among those who defected.

The delegation was welcomed into DCP by former Starehe MP Maina Kamanda, who now serves as the National Chairperson of the Council of Eminent Persons within DCP. Kamanda was previously a key political broker in the Jubilee Party.

The political realignment signals a significant shift in Nairobi’s political landscape as the 2027 elections approach, with Rigathi Gachagua’s DCP consolidating support from former Jubilee members.
