Tanzania Vice President Emmanuel Nchimbi Steps Down, Exits Politics

Tanzania's Vice President Emmanuel John Nchimbi has officially resigned from his position and announced his retirement from politics and public service, effective September 4, 2026.

In a statement released on August 25 from the Vice President's Office in Dodoma, Nchimbi confirmed he had formally notified President Samia Suluhu Hassan of his decision. He cited constitutional provisions in Articles 50(2)(c) and 149(2) as the basis for his resignation.

"Today, 25 August 2026, I submitted a letter to the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Samia Suluhu Hassan, informing her of my decision to retire from politics and public service," Nchimbi said. "Consequently, I will step down as Vice President effective 4 September 2026."

Nchimbi explained his decision was linked to a promise made to President Samia on August 27, 2025, when he pledged his full support to her administration and the nation. He added that he had assured her he would relinquish his post if she desired a change in the vice presidency.

"I have become convinced that Her Excellency the President desires a change, and I am honouring my commitment," he stated.

Expressing gratitude, Nchimbi thanked President Samia, the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party, and Tanzanians for their trust and support throughout his career. He pledged to remain a committed citizen of Tanzania.

Political Career Highlights

• Nchimbi's political journey began in the 1990s after graduating from the Institute of Development Management-Mzumbe (now Mzumbe University).
• He has served as Songea Urban MP, held ministerial and deputy ministerial roles under former President Jakaya Kikwete.
• He was Tanzania's ambassador to Brazil and Egypt before returning to senior roles within CCM.
• In January 2024, he was appointed CCM Secretary-General.
• He became President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s running mate in the 2025 general election, subsequently assuming the vice presidency.
