Kamukunji MP Yusuf Hassan Joins Gachagua’s DCP, Eyes Fifth Term and Supports 2027 Presidential Bid

Kamukunji Member of Parliament Yusuf Hassan has officially joined the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), led by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, marking a significant boost for the party ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Hassan, who was re-elected for a fourth term in 2022 under the Jubilee Party, announced his intention to seek a fifth term representing Kamukunji under the DCP banner. He also declared his support for Gachagua's presidential ambitions in the upcoming election.

Political Realignments Ahead of 2027

First elected in 2011 on a Party of National Unity (PNU) ticket, Hassan’s shift to DCP underscores growing political realignments as parties prepare for the next polls. His move comes amid intensified efforts by Gachagua to build a broad coalition across Kenya’s diverse communities.

DCP Emphasizes Inclusivity

At the DCP headquarters in Nairobi, Secretary-General designate and Nyandarua Senator John Methu highlighted Hassan’s inclusion as evidence that the party transcends ethnic divisions.

• "This is a party for all Kenyans," Methu stated, citing other leaders like Deputy Party Leader Cleophas Malala, who represents different communities within the party.

Methu challenged narratives branding DCP as an ethnically exclusive party, emphasizing its commitment to national inclusivity.

Strengthening Community Ties

Gachagua has been actively engaging various communities and leaders, including a recent meeting with Somali community members at his Wamunyoro residence. He reaffirmed his commitment to fostering strong relations with the Somali community, describing it as vital for Kenya’s future.

Several Jubilee Party members, including Roysambu MP Isaac Waihenya Ndirangu and multiple constituency chairpersons, have also defected to DCP, signaling the party’s expanding reach.

Looking Ahead

With Hassan’s entry, DCP continues to grow its leadership base and consolidate support ahead of the 2027 elections. The party’s leadership has called for unity across political divides, cautioning against allowing political differences to fragment communities.
