The Interior Ministry has confirmed that the Linda Mwananchi rally scheduled for August 16 in Homa Bay will proceed peacefully, with a detailed security plan implemented before, during, and after the event.
Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omolo spoke on August 13 at the Brace for Peace programme launch at Kabete National Polytechnic. The initiative aims to equip youth with skills to promote peace and avoid exploitation by political actors.
PS Omolo’s Appeal to Politicians and Youth
Omolo highlighted that poverty and marginalisation increase the risk of youth being manipulated into violence. He urged politicians to refrain from inciting disorder through vulnerable young people and called on the youth to resist being used as tools for political violence.
Omolo stated: "Everyone has the right to visit any part of the country and discuss their issues peacefully. Our expectation is that law and order must be maintained." He added that the ministry is coordinating with police to address any criminal activities linked to political agitation.
Governor Wanga Welcomes Rally with Conditions
Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga welcomed the rally organisers but warned against bringing individuals armed with crude weapons. She emphasised that the county has enjoyed peace since 2013 and dismissed claims that locals have used weapons like pangas or bows during political events.
Wanga urged organisers to report any credible threats to security agencies instead of spreading unverified claims publicly, describing such propaganda as "irresponsible and reckless." She accused outsiders of attempting to introduce violence into the county.
