Gachagua Responds to Ruto: 'He Knows Why We Cannot Work Together'

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has addressed President William Ruto’s recent statement that he could work with any opposition leader except him.

Speaking from his Wamunyoro home during a visit from a North Eastern delegation on Monday, August 24, 2026, Gachagua said the president’s remarks confirmed what both already know – their political partnership is impossible.

Gachagua explained:

• "He says he is ready to work with everyone but not with me. It is not because he refuses, but because he knows it cannot happen. I cannot take his money," he said.
• He revealed that Ruto previously tried to win him back through intermediaries, but those efforts failed.
• He insisted that no amount of persuasion or financial incentive would make him collaborate with the president.

Gachagua also expressed confidence that Ruto’s rejection positions him well to challenge the president in the 2027 general election. He believes the remarks strengthen his chances of becoming the United Opposition’s presidential candidate.

The former deputy president continues to advocate for a united opposition front to face Ruto’s re-election bid.
