Nairobi Allocates Sh2 Billion for Flood Control Ahead of El Niño Rains

Nairobi County has committed Sh2 billion for drainage and flood mitigation projects in preparation for the anticipated El Niño rains expected in October.

The initiatives, which are well underway with tenders already awarded, focus on enhancing the city's sewerage systems and expanding drainage channels across various locations.

Targeted Flood Mitigation Efforts

• The funding aims to address flooding along 19 roads identified as particularly susceptible to waterlogging.
• Authorities have mapped 227 flood-prone hotspots distributed across 17 sub-counties, underscoring the widespread vulnerability within the capital.

Government Actions and Community Advisory

During an inspection tour, Governor Johnson Sakaja urged residents in high-risk zones, especially those near rivers and drainage channels, to exercise caution and cooperate with county officials. This includes consenting to temporary relocation when necessary to ensure safety.

To streamline emergency responses related to El Niño impacts, the county government has formed five specialised multi-agency committees tasked with coordinating rapid interventions during incidents.

These measures are part of a broader strategy to provide sustainable solutions to Nairobi's chronic flooding problems that have historically disrupted transport, commerce, and residential areas.
