Gachagua Raises Alarm Over Potential Violence Ahead of Emurua Dikirr Visit, Challenges Police IG on Security
Former DP Rigathi Gachagua warns of possible violence in Emurua Dikirr, demands Police IG Kanja guarantee safety for his August 21 visit.
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has expressed serious concerns over threats of violence ahead of his scheduled visit to Emurua Dikirr Constituency in Narok County on August 21, 2026. He has called on Inspector General of Police David Kanja to provide assurances of security for himself, his supporters, and local residents during the visit.
In an open letter to IG Kanja, Gachagua highlighted recent threats reportedly issued by Emurua Dikirr MP David Kipsang Keter and others, which have been circulated via video and social media. He warned that these threats could lead to unrest similar to the violent clashes experienced recently in Homa Bay County during the Linda Mwananchi Movement tour, which resulted in fatalities and property damage.
Gachagua, leader of the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), is visiting the area following an invitation from DCP candidate Vincent Rotich, who finished second in the May 14, 2026 by-election. He emphasized his constitutional right to travel freely and participate in political activities across the country.
In his letter, Gachagua also accused Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen and Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo of allegedly orchestrating and financing violence in Emurua Dikirr, though these claims remain unverified. He criticized the police leadership under IG Kanja for failing to act on previous attacks against him, citing a January 2026 meeting where he presented evidence of 24 such incidents.
Gachagua urged IG Kanja to take full control of the National Police Service ahead of the 2027 general elections or consider stepping down. He referenced the case of former Police Commissioner Mohamed Ali, who faced charges at the International Criminal Court related to post-election violence in 2007/08.
Concluding his letter, Gachagua demanded explicit guarantees that his visit and the safety of Emurua Dikirr residents would be protected. He questioned whether the police are prepared to prevent any disruption during the planned political event.
