Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has declared that he will take on the role of director of the presidential campaign if he is not selected as the United Opposition’s flagbearer for the 2027 general election.

Speaking from his Wamunyoro residence during a meeting with a Wiper Party delegation on August 18, 2026, the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader emphasized his commitment to steering the opposition to victory at the ballot box.

Gachagua confidently described himself as a shrewd campaign strategist, asserting that even President William Ruto, whom he identified as the main competitor, recognizes his political prowess and is wary of his influence.

“If I am not the opposition’s flagbearer, I will serve as the director of the presidential campaigns,” Gachagua stated.

He also reiterated the importance of unity within the United Opposition, urging them to settle on a single presidential candidate. According to him, a united front remains the best strategy to defeat President Ruto in the upcoming election.

Opposition Flagbearer Debate

The United Opposition is actively working to consolidate its position ahead of the 2027 polls. While most opposition leaders support fielding one presidential candidate, they differ on the timing of the selection.

  • Gachagua advocates for identifying the candidate approximately three months before the election, after consolidating political bases.
  • Other leaders push for an earlier decision to allow sufficient time for mobilization.

Jubilee Party Deputy Leader Jeremiah Kioni expressed skepticism about the opposition agreeing on a single candidate. He proposed that leaders might run independently and consider forming alliances after a potential runoff.

Kioni also questioned the feasibility of using scientific polls to pick the opposition’s candidate, citing financial and logistical challenges.

Ruto’s Preparations

Meanwhile, President William Ruto is also solidifying his political strategy as the 2027 general election approaches, setting the stage for a fiercely contested race.
