Former Zambian Minister Killed During Security Raid Linked to Opposition
Ex-minister Mutotwe Kafwaya died in a security operation targeting opposition leader Brian Mundubile’s associates after Zambia’s presidential election.
A former Zambian minister, Mutotwe Kafwaya, was fatally shot during a security raid on a property connected to opposition leader Brian Mundubile, authorities confirmed.
The incident occurred in Lusaka on the Friday following last week's presidential election. Police reported that the operation involved an exchange of gunfire between a joint security task force and unidentified armed individuals.
During the raid, eleven people were detained. Security officials accused Mundubile's party, the National Restoration Party of the United Patriots (NRPUP), of engaging in insurgency and militia activities, and of possessing high-grade weapons. Mundubile has denied these claims, calling them "total fabrications," and has since gone into hiding.
Official election results show incumbent President Hakainde Hichilema securing a second term with 60% of the vote, while Mundubile received 38% and intends to challenge the results in court, alleging vote tampering.
Regarding Kafwaya, Mundubile expressed uncertainty about his whereabouts after the raid. Police later confirmed the 49-year-old's death, stating that the firearm used by the deceased was recovered and that family members identified him.

Regional observers described the recent election as mostly peaceful but noted concerns over late electoral reforms and restrictions on opposition campaigning and media access. The European Union observation mission highlighted that these constraints may have contributed to an uneven electoral contest.
