The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has issued a strong condemnation of the violent incidents that erupted following the FKF Shield Cup final between Tusker FC and Gor Mahia FC at Nyayo National Stadium.
Despite Tusker securing a 3-1 victory over Gor Mahia to claim the Shield Cup title, the post-match celebrations were disrupted when some Gor Mahia supporters invaded the pitch. The unrest forced police to deploy tear gas, affecting fans, journalists, and officials present for the trophy presentation.
Chaos at Nyayo National Stadium
The pitch invasion prevented Tusker players from lifting the trophy as planned. Gor Mahia Vice President Sally Bolo was seen appealing to fans to cease the destruction of the presentation area.
Among those caught in the turmoil was Sporty FM journalist Hesbon Nyamari, who reported a distressing experience with police officers amid the disorder. Nyamari questioned the ongoing harassment of journalists covering the sport.
FKF's Response and Commitment
In an official statement, FKF condemned the acts of violence, disorder, and hooliganism witnessed during the event. The Federation emphasized that such behaviour endangers the safety of players, supporters, officials, and media personnel and has no place in Kenyan football.
FKF pledged to collaborate with authorities and football stakeholders to investigate the incidents thoroughly. The Federation vowed to hold accountable anyone found responsible, whether they are fans, club officials, stewards, or security personnel, in accordance with due process.
