On the night of August 15, 2026, a devastating fire broke out in Mogotio town, Baringo County, destroying several business premises. The blaze, which started around 11 pm, consumed properties belonging to local traders, leaving many counting heavy losses.
Video footage showed flames engulfing the affected buildings while thick smoke filled the night sky. Despite the efforts of onlookers, business owners were unable to save their goods and property.
Witnesses reported that firefighters and emergency personnel arrived late, by which time the fire had caused extensive damage. This delayed response has prompted calls for the Baringo County Government to improve firefighting and rescue infrastructure in Mogotio.
Mogotio MP Reuben Kiborek criticized the lack of a dedicated fire engine for the municipality, emphasizing the need for better emergency services to protect lives and property. He stated, "It is a great shame that Mogotio Municipality does not have a fire engine. The county government must act to ensure proper firefighting and emergency response capabilities."
Residents echoed the call for reliable fire and rescue services to reduce response times and minimize losses during such emergencies.
This incident is part of a growing trend of fires across Kenya affecting both residential and commercial areas. Just days earlier, a fire in the Kangemi area of Nairobi destroyed homes and caused injuries, with investigations ongoing into the cause. Similar fires have also been reported in Nairobi markets such as Gikomba and Toi, as well as in public transport terminals.
