Family of Officer Who Died During Homa Bay Rally Demands Clarification on Cause of Death

The family of Jim Richardson Onkundi, the police officer who died while on duty during the Linda Mwananchi tour in Homa Bay County, is demanding a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.

On Monday, August 24, 2026, Simon Onkundi, the deceased’s brother, told a local television station that the police provided contradictory accounts about how Jim died. Initially, the family was informed that Jim had been involved in an accident and later confirmed dead at a local hospital. However, other officers reportedly told the family that he died on the scene during the rally.

Conflicting accounts raise questions

Simon Onkundi said, "The OCPD told us Jim had an accident and was taken to the hospital where he was confirmed dead. Others said he died right there at the scene."

Uncle disputes injury reports

Samson Ombori, Jim’s uncle, challenged the police’s description of the injuries, saying that although officers claimed Jim had facial wounds, his body showed no such marks. He also raised concerns about the circumstances in which Jim was found without his clothes, identification, or weapon.

Ombori called on Inspector General Douglas Kanja to launch an independent inquiry, stating, "They said he had facial injuries, but his face was untouched. He looked perfectly fine. We are puzzled about how he died. More strangely, his belongings including his pistol and uniform were missing."

Family calls for government intervention

The deceased’s widow, Sheila Zablon, echoed the demand for clarity, urging the government to investigate the cause of Jim’s death so the family can find closure.

The Linda Mwananchi tour on Sunday, August 16, 2026, was marred by political unrest and disruptions starting from Nyandiwa in Suba South constituency. Opposition leaders including Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja Sifuna, Siaya Governor James Orengo, and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino faced challenges such as road blockades, burning tyres, and stone placements on key roads around Homa Bay.
