The Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) has introduced a new payment feature that allows investors to settle government securities bids using M-Pesa on its DhowCSD platform.

Through this update, Kenyans can make payments of up to KSh 250,000 directly from their mobile phones when purchasing Treasury Bills and Bonds. The payment must be initiated within the DhowCSD app or web portal, ensuring transactions are securely processed through the official interface.

How the New Payment System Works

  • Payments are made via the transaction tab on the DhowCSD mobile app or website.
  • Currently, M-Pesa is the sole supported mobile payment method.
  • The CBK plans to add other mobile money platforms in future updates.
  • Investors bidding for amounts exceeding KSh 250,000 will need to use alternative payment channels for the balance.
  • The DhowCSD app is available for download on Google Play and the Apple App Store.

This initiative aims to simplify the investment process in government securities, removing previous payment hurdles and making it easier for retail investors to participate.

Investor Support

For assistance, investors can contact the DhowCSD support team via phone at +254 709 081222 or the toll-free line 0800 720222. Email support is also available at DhowCSD@centralbank.go.ke.

The move aligns with broader efforts by Kenyan financial institutions to integrate mobile money services into investment and banking platforms, enhancing accessibility for users without traditional bank accounts.
