Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema has appealed for calm and unity as the nation awaits the final results of the recent general elections. His statement came late on Friday following incidents of violence in several areas.
"Elections anywhere take time, and so do the results," Hichilema wrote on social media, emphasizing the importance of a careful and credible tallying process. He urged leaders to promote peace and patience during this period.
Election Counting Disrupted
The Electoral Commission of Zambia temporarily halted the counting of votes after reports emerged of violence targeting election staff and theft of marked ballots in some districts. The suspension was later lifted, and counting resumed under increased security measures.
Zambians cast their votes on Thursday to elect the president, members of parliament, and local government officials. President Hichilema reminded citizens to maintain peace and adhere to the rule of law while awaiting the official results.
