Zambia’s Election Turmoil Fuels Kenyan Concerns Ahead of 2027 Polls

The violent aftermath of Zambia’s recent presidential election has heightened anxieties in Kenya regarding the integrity of its upcoming 2027 elections. Kenya’s Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) is under intense scrutiny as parallels are drawn with Zambia’s disputed vote and ensuing unrest.

In Zambia, the election was marred by armed attacks on polling officials, the theft of ballot papers, and the arrest of opposition figures accused of plotting an insurrection. President Hakainde Hichilema was declared the winner with about 60% of the vote, but opposition leader Brian Mundubile rejected the results, alleging manipulation and irregularities. The opposition plans to legally challenge the outcome.

Kenya’s Electoral Trust Under Pressure

Kenyan politicians and civil society have expressed concern that similar tactics of electoral interference—such as bribery, biometric tampering, and state-sponsored intimidation—could be deployed in Kenya’s next general election. Opposition leader Kalonzo Musyoka has criticized the IEBC for not condemning inflammatory remarks by senior politicians suggesting vote manipulation.

IEBC Chair Erastus Ethekon responded by affirming the commission’s commitment to free and fair elections, noting that no formal complaints have been received regarding such statements. He urged political actors to use legal channels to address electoral concerns.

Technology and Security Concerns

Both Zambia and Kenya face skepticism over the use of biometric and electronic voting technologies. In Zambia, opposition claims focus on government control over biometric kits, while in Kenya, fears revolve around the integrity of KIEMS kits and Smartmatic systems, with worries about pre-loaded results and transmission errors.

Security issues have intensified in Kenya following Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen’s public vow to monitor former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, accusing him of fomenting violence and soliciting funds for criminal gangs. Murkomen’s statements have amplified fears of politically motivated security crackdowns ahead of 2027.

Historical Context and Looking Ahead

Kenya’s electoral history, marked by the deadly 2007 post-election violence and the 2017 Supreme Court nullification of results, adds gravity to current concerns. Although Kenya’s 2022 polls were largely peaceful, opposition claims of manipulation persist.

As Zambia braces for a legal challenge by the opposition and possible localized unrest, Kenya’s IEBC faces growing demands to rebuild trust and demonstrate impartiality. The ruling United Democratic Alliance maintains confidence in its democratic standing, urging opponents to focus on issue-based campaigns and peaceful elections.
