Wavinya Ndeti Challenges Alfred Mutua’s Critique of Machakos Development

Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti has dismissed criticism from former governor and current Labour Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua regarding the state of county projects, defending her administration’s development record.

Mutua recently toured Machakos Town, visiting the Level 5 Hospital and People’s Park—projects linked to his tenure. While commending hospital staff, he pointed out the need for ongoing investment and maintenance to ensure quality healthcare. He was particularly critical of Machakos People’s Park, describing it as having declined from a once vibrant public space to a poorly maintained facility locals now jokingly call a “snake park.”

Mutua emphasized that true development involves not only launching projects but also sustaining them, urging leadership to be judged by tangible results rather than promises.

Ndeti Highlights New Initiatives and Infrastructure

In response, Ndeti downplayed Mutua’s remarks as political theatrics and highlighted her administration’s focus on inclusive development. She noted significant investments in youth empowerment through the Machakos Youth Service, which equips young people with practical skills and supports self-employment.

She also referenced social programs like the Maziwa ya Mama initiative and the ECDE School Feeding Programme, which have boosted early childhood education attendance and nutrition.

On infrastructure, Ndeti pointed out ongoing work on six major roads, alongside other road upgrades countywide. She underscored improvements in healthcare through enhanced equipment, staffing, and diagnostic services, bringing medical care closer to residents.

Additional investments in agriculture and water projects, including over 100 surface-water harvesting schemes, support irrigation, livestock, and household needs across Machakos.

Competing Views on County Progress

The exchange between Mutua and Ndeti frames two contrasting perspectives on Machakos’ development. Mutua stresses the importance of maintaining public projects and accountability, while Ndeti focuses on new programs and infrastructure as proof of ongoing progress.

Both leaders agree that development must be visible and sustainable, but their debate underscores differing approaches to public investment and service delivery in Machakos County.
