A funeral in Kakamega County descended into chaos on Tuesday when tensions between family members erupted into violence during the burial of Mzee Wabomba Kimingichi in Chimoi village, Lugari Constituency.
The conflict reportedly stemmed from a disagreement involving the deceased's second wife, who protested her exclusion from funeral planning. This unresolved dispute escalated during the service, resulting in physical fights among mourners.
As the situation worsened, plastic chairs were thrown and the officiating pastor abandoned the ceremony, fleeing the scene alongside several attendees. The burial proceeded without the usual prayers, eulogies, or traditional rites, leaving the community unsettled.
Several individuals sustained injuries amid the clashes and were taken to a nearby hospital; however, the number of those affected remains unconfirmed.
Community Reaction and Broader Concerns
Residents have expressed concern over the incident, urging families to resolve internal conflicts peacefully, especially during solemn occasions such as funerals.
In a related issue within Lugari, another family faced hardship when a 17-year-old's body was held at a mortuary for over a month due to unpaid hospital bills. After unsuccessful fundraising efforts, the family surrendered land title deeds to secure the release of the body.
