Newton Kipchumba, a Kenyan TikTok creator residing in the United States, has opened up about his unexpected path from working in care and nursing roles to joining the US Army.
After relocating to the US around three years ago, Kipchumba initially took on care jobs before enrolling in school. Struggling to balance his studies with work he found unfulfilling, he made a spontaneous decision to enlist in the military.
Choosing the Army
Kipchumba considered several branches of the US military, including the Air Force and Marines, but ultimately settled on the Army, partly because he could not swim, which ruled out the Marines.
He approached a military recruiter, submitted necessary documents such as his green card, Kenyan passport, US driver’s license, and Social Security number, and completed medical and background checks.
Motivations and Public Curiosity
In his TikTok videos, Kipchumba often appears in camouflage gear, which sparked curiosity among his followers about how a Kenyan newcomer ended up in the US military.
He explained that his decision was driven by a desire to change his life and explore travel opportunities, rather than a long-term plan. Once committed, the enlistment process became straightforward.
