Former President Uhuru Kenyatta publicly rejected allegations that he is financing Senator Edwin Sifuna’s political activities during an address in Kitale on August 23.

Speaking at the 23rd anniversary of the late Vice President Michael Kijana Wamalwa, Uhuru mentioned Sifuna among potential 2027 presidential candidates, prompting cheers from the crowd. He quickly clarified, "I do not want to be called a sponsor or involved in issues. Kenyans have a choice and there is no need to force any Kenyan on who to support."

Call for Peaceful Political Engagement

Uhuru urged political actors to pursue votes through peaceful means, condemning recent incidents of political intimidation and disruptions at opposition rallies, particularly referencing events in Homa Bay County where Sifuna’s Linda Mwananchi team was blocked from holding a rally.

"This matter of blocking others from holding rallies is taking the country backwards," Uhuru said. "If you want votes, seek them peacefully and humbly. You will be given or denied."

He reflected on his own political journey, emphasizing humility and unity among leaders, and reminding that the ultimate decision lies with the people and God.

Context on Sponsorship Allegations

The former president’s remarks come amidst persistent accusations from government supporters claiming he is covertly supporting Sifuna’s Linda Mwananchi movement. Sifuna, who was removed as ODM secretary general, has gained significant support and is viewed as a key opposition figure ahead of the 2027 elections.

Uhuru stressed his neutrality, stating he has no political ambitions, but appreciates the opportunity to have served Kenya.

"Let people not say that my remarks are political. I do not have an interest in any seat. I am just thanking God for the life he has given me and the chance to lead Kenya," he concluded.
