Authorities have arrested three individuals linked to an attempted robbery on the Mombasa–Nairobi highway that occurred on May 6, 2026. The suspects were apprehended in Mtito Andei after a prolonged investigation by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

The incident involved a gang that created a fake roadside emergency to lure a Subaru Impreza driver. The suspects then tried to hijack the vehicle at gunpoint. However, the attempt was thwarted when a struggle ensued between the driver and the assailants. During the confrontation, a firearm discharged, fatally wounding one of the attackers, identified as Gift Musau.

Following the shooting, Musau's accomplices fled the scene on a motorcycle, abandoning him. Despite their initial escape, law enforcement continued intelligence-led operations to track down the remaining suspects.

Arrests and Evidence Recovered

  • On August 21, 2026, two suspects, Alex Mueti Kasina and Stephen Kalungo Joel, were detained at a hideout in Kinyambu.
  • The following day, a third suspect, Jamlick Muli Muasa (alias Star), was arrested at his shop in Kinyambu.
  • A search of Muasa's premises uncovered two mobile phones, multiple identity cards and driving licenses under various names, and other items.

The trio is scheduled to face charges including murder, attempted robbery with violence, and possession of unlicensed ammunition when they appear in court on August 24, 2026. Investigations remain ongoing.

The DCI reaffirmed its commitment to dismantling criminal networks targeting innocent motorists and Kenyans at large.
