South Sudan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation has refuted claims that its embassy in Nairobi and other diplomatic missions abroad have been closed.
In a statement released on Thursday, August 13, the ministry explained that the Nairobi embassy encountered a temporary technical issue which affected some of its services. Efforts are ongoing to resolve the matter and ensure full restoration of operations.
Clarification on embassy status
- The embassy in Nairobi has not been shut down, contrary to circulating reports.
- The disruption was due to a technical problem, not financial difficulties such as unpaid rent.
- The ministry dismissed rumours about closures of other South Sudanese missions abroad.
These clarifications came after reports surfaced that the Nairobi embassy in Kilimani had closed on Tuesday following alleged unpaid rent arrears, causing concern among South Sudanese nationals in Kenya who depend on the embassy for consular services.
Previously, in November 2025, the Nairobi embassy had also faced closure rumors linked to rent issues before resuming normal operations.
The ministry urged the public and media outlets to seek information through official government channels to avoid misinformation.
Upcoming leadership change
The statement also noted a planned transition in leadership at the Nairobi embassy, with Ambassador Simon Juach Deng set to take office in September.
