Six activists were arraigned at Milimani Law Courts after organizing a protest outside the National Police Service headquarters in Nairobi. The demonstration called for the resignation of Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja.
The protest, which involved carrying symbolic dummy coffins and crosses, reportedly caused traffic disruptions along Taifa Road. The activists arrested include Julius Kamau, Mulinge Muteti, Michael Nginge, and Collins Ochieng.
Charges and Court Proceedings
State counsel Mr Kiragu informed the court that the accused committed the offence during the protest. The activists, represented by lawyer Kevin Kang’ethe, argued that their actions were an exercise of their constitutional right to peaceful assembly and did not intend to cause harm or pose a threat.
While the prosecution did not oppose the activists’ bail application, it requested that the court prohibit them from participating in further protests pending the case’s resolution.
The court granted each activist a bond of Sh40,000 or an alternative cash bail of Sh3,000. The matter is scheduled for mention on August 31, 2026, for further directions.
