President William Ruto has pledged to reduce fertiliser and seed prices starting next year to help farmers recover from recent crop failures caused by inadequate rains.

Speaking at the ACK Church in Moiben, Uasin Gishu County, Ruto acknowledged that many farmers lost their crops due to the failed rains. He encouraged them to take advantage of the upcoming short rains, expected from August through December, to resume farming and strengthen Kenya's food security.

Key points from Ruto's address include:

  • Government intervention to lower fertiliser and seed costs to boost agricultural productivity.
  • An appeal for farmers to increase production to prevent future food shortages.
  • Announcement of a new national development blueprint, Vision 2060, to succeed Vision 2030.

Ruto explained that Vision 2060 will align Kenya’s development plans with the 2010 Constitution, unlike Vision 2030, which was launched before the constitution was enacted. He emphasized the need for a transparent national dialogue to build consensus on the country's future development path.

The President also criticized opposition leaders who have opposed the Vision 2060 initiative, asserting that their resistance undermines public participation and lacks a coherent vision for Kenya’s progress. He clarified that the initiative is not linked to the 2027 general elections.
