President William Ruto has defended the early launch of Vision 2060, describing it as a crucial strategy to address Kenya’s persistent challenges and secure a prosperous future beyond his tenure.
Speaking at the Beyond 2030 Summit held at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC), Ruto emphasized the need to shift focus from short-term electoral gains to sustainable development for future generations.
Vision 2060: A Long-Term Development Blueprint
Launched on July 30, Vision 2060 is set to succeed the current Vision 2030 framework. The government plans to develop this new blueprint through extensive nationwide consultations involving diverse stakeholders such as:
- The private sector
- Academia
- Civil society
- Faith-based organizations
- Professional bodies
- Workers
- Creatives
- Youth representatives
President Ruto highlighted that the plan aims to foster inclusive development and eliminate inequality, underscoring that no single group holds a monopoly on ideas. He called on all Kenyans to contribute collaboratively to shaping the country’s future.
Responding to Criticism
Despite the government's enthusiasm, the initiative has faced criticism from opposition figures like Rigathi Gachagua, who questioned the relevance of a long-term plan amid pressing economic and security challenges.
However, Ruto remained resolute, stating, "We have been thinking about the next election instead of the next generation, and that has been the problem." He urged Kenyans to engage in the conversation and not shy away from planning for the decades ahead.
