Ruto Reflects on Final Moments and Sudden Death of Raila Odinga
President Ruto recalls last talks with Raila Odinga days before his death and the shock of receiving the early morning call confirming the loss.
President William Ruto has shared insights into his final interactions with former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, revealing their recent discussions about Kenya’s future and Odinga’s health before his passing.
In an interview with the Nation, Ruto described their last meeting at Odinga’s Nairobi home, where they dined together and talked about the former PM’s ongoing health challenges and plans for additional medical advice.
Ruto explained that Odinga had returned from Malindi seeking a warmer climate for his health and was considering a second medical opinion due to slow recovery. The president encouraged him to pursue further treatment.
The two leaders maintained contact even after Odinga traveled to India for treatment, with Odinga initially optimistic about his condition. However, on the morning of October 15, 2025, Ruto received a distressing call from Odinga’s elder brother, Dr. Oburu Oginga, informing him of Raila’s sudden deterioration and passing.
Ruto recalled the shock of the news, especially as he had spoken to Odinga just days prior when the former PM had been discharged and resting. Odinga’s sister later confirmed that he had exercised that morning before his condition worsened rapidly.
Political Journey and Legacy
The death marked an abrupt end to a complex political relationship spanning decades. Ruto and Odinga began on opposing sides but later united in the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), before becoming rivals in the 2022 presidential race where Ruto emerged victorious.
Following political tensions in 2024, their camps reconciled with Odinga joining the broad-based government. Ruto noted that their relationship transcended politics in recent times, highlighting Odinga’s role in stabilizing the country during challenging periods and standing firmly for democracy.
Aftermath and Diplomatic Efforts
After Odinga’s death, President Ruto engaged in arrangements to repatriate his body, including discussions with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who had a personal connection with the late leader.
Ruto described the rapid progression of events as the most painful aspect of the loss, emphasizing the abrupt end to a significant political partnership and friendship.
