Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo has assured the Linda Mwananchi movement of comprehensive security arrangements ahead of their rally slated for Sunday in Homa Bay.
The assurance follows claims by the coalition that certain Nyanza leaders were allegedly plotting to mobilize youths to disrupt the event.
Security Measures and Warnings
PS Omollo emphasized that the right to hold political gatherings anywhere in Kenya is protected by law. He confirmed that security agencies have deployed adequate personnel to maintain order and safety during the rally.
"Everyone has a right to hold a meeting anywhere in the country," Omollo stated, urging all participants and organizers to respect the law and maintain peace.
He further warned that any individuals or groups attempting to cause chaos or obstruct the rally will face stringent legal consequences.
"Political goonship will not be tolerated. Kenya must embrace tolerance for diverse opinions without violence," he added.
Political Context
Siaya Governor James Orengo, a rally organizer, met with supporters from Migori and Homa Bay counties, describing Linda Mwananchi as a movement aiming to reclaim political influence previously held by the ODM party.
Orengo suggested that Linda Mwananchi could evolve into a political party representing the aspirations ODM once championed, highlighting the absence of an ODM presidential candidate for 2027.
Tensions Ahead of the Rally
The security assurances come amid accusations by Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, who alleged that regional leaders including Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga and Migori Governor Ochilo Ayacko were conspiring to disrupt the rally. The Linda Mwananchi coalition has also raised alarms about secret meetings intended to arm and mobilize disruptors.
As the rally approaches, the focus remains on the event's peaceful execution and the government's commitment to uphold security and order.
