President William Ruto has emphasized that the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) should play a critical role not only in defending the nation but also in its development. Speaking at the passing-out parade for recruits at the KDF Training School in Eldoret, he underscored that defense and development are intertwined priorities essential for Kenya’s future.

KDF’s Expanding Role in National Development

While the Constitution mandates the KDF to protect Kenya’s sovereignty and support emergency responses, President Ruto highlighted the military’s growing involvement in diverse sectors such as:

  • Infrastructure and engineering projects
  • Disaster response and medical services
  • Logistics and maritime operations
  • Cybersecurity initiatives

He cited ongoing KDF contributions to major state projects including the Raila Odinga International Stadium at Talanta Sports City, the Bomas International Convention Complex, and efforts to rebuild the country’s shipbuilding capacity through Kenya Shipyards Ltd and the Kenya Navy.

President Ruto pointed to the locally built MV Uhuru II ferry on Lake Victoria as an example of how defense capabilities can foster industrial growth. He stressed the importance of aligning military contributions with Kenya’s constitutional framework and national needs.

Security and Development: Two Sides of the Same Coin

The President urged the new recruits to embrace knowledge, technology, and adaptability in a rapidly changing security landscape marked by cyber threats, unmanned drones, climate change, and public health crises. He noted that safeguarding Kenya’s digital infrastructure, food systems, energy grids, and ports is as vital as protecting physical borders.

“Security enables development. Development strengthens security,” he said, urging the nation to consider both when planning beyond Vision 2030.

Government Support for Soldiers

President Ruto pledged continued government backing for the welfare, training, and operational readiness of the KDF. He promised enhanced capabilities in cybersecurity, intelligence, maritime security, and military medicine, alongside ensuring dignity and recognition for service members and their families.
