President William Ruto has called for a comprehensive overhaul of Kenya's national security strategy to address emerging threats posed by artificial intelligence, cyberattacks, climate change, and new disease outbreaks.
Speaking at the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) passing-out parade for the first recruits of 2025 in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County, Ruto emphasised the need to rethink security beyond traditional physical borders.
Expanding the Definition of National Security
Ruto highlighted that national security must encompass protection of digital infrastructure, critical utilities such as food and energy systems, as well as Kenya's maritime boundaries.
"KDF must not simply defend the Kenya of today; it must also secure the Kenya we intend to become," he stated, urging the armed forces to prepare for future challenges.
Investment in KDF Capabilities and Welfare
The President pledged increased government investment aimed at enhancing the welfare, training, and operational readiness of the Kenya Defence Forces. Priority areas include:
- Cybersecurity
- Intelligence gathering
- Maritime security
- Military medicine
He also assured that KDF personnel and their families will receive deserved recognition and support for their service.
Linking Security and Development
Addressing the recruits, Ruto underscored the interconnectedness of security and development, noting that each reinforces the other. This message comes as Kenya engages in a national dialogue on its development path beyond Vision 2030, with security positioned as a central pillar.
He congratulated the new soldiers on completing rigorous training and called on them to serve with courage, discipline, and restraint as they join the defence forces.
