The Premier League has unveiled a set of new regulations for the 2026/27 season aimed at minimizing time-wasting and improving the flow of matches.

Key Changes for Injured Players

Players receiving treatment on the field must now remain off the pitch for at least one full minute after play resumes, doubling the previous 30-second requirement. This measure is intended to prevent teams from exploiting minor injuries to disrupt opponents' momentum.

Substitution and Goalkeeper Protocols

  • Players leaving the pitch during substitutions have a 10-second window to exit. Failure to comply means the substitute can only enter after the next stoppage and a full minute has passed.
  • In cases where a goalkeeper is injured, coaches must immediately remove an outfield player who will then stay off the field for one minute post-restart. Exceptions apply if the injury was caused by a foul or collision involving another player needing treatment.

Enhanced Referee Powers Against Delays

Referees can now enforce a visible five-second countdown for delayed throw-ins or goal-kicks. If the ball is not back in play within this timeframe, possession is awarded to the opposing team. Delayed throw-ins result in the opposition restarting from the same spot, while delayed goal-kicks lead to a corner kick.

VAR Adjustments

The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system's scope has been expanded to review second yellow cards that lead to red cards, but only if the second booking was clearly incorrect. VAR will not add yellow cards that the referee did not originally show.
