Siaya Governor James Orengo has confirmed that the Linda Mwananchi movement will hold its scheduled rally in Homa Bay on Sunday, August 16, 2026, despite reports of possible disruptions.
Addressing the media in Kisumu on August 12, Orengo emphasized that the movement had informed police about the event and was committed to proceeding without retreat.
Security Concerns Ahead of Rally
- Earlier incidents in Homa Bay included youth-led protests that disrupted businesses and attacks on the movement’s county coordinator, Wakili Samwel Nyauke, and his property.
- Orengo condemned the violence and called for the arrest of those responsible and their backers.
- He alleged that local leaders were mobilizing groups with weapons such as pangas, rungus, bows, and arrows to disrupt the rally, with some weapons reportedly stored at a former election tallying centre.
- These claims remain unverified, but Orengo said the movement would formally report them to the police.
Defending Political Rights
Orengo stressed the constitutional right to assemble, associate, and express political views should be upheld. He accused certain Homa Bay leaders of attempting to restrict political activities, which he said could escalate tensions.
He recalled his historical role in Kenya’s multiparty democracy struggle and rejected attempts to dictate Luo community leadership ahead of the 2027 presidential race, urging voters to decide freely.
Linda Mwananchi’s Political Ambitions
Launched about four months ago, Linda Mwananchi is preparing to transition into a political party for the 2027 General Election. The movement plans to field candidates nationwide and shift focus from critiquing government performance to proposing solutions.
Orengo said, “Many Kenyans know what is wrong with Kenya. How to fix it is the problem.”
The upcoming Homa Bay rally marks a key step for Linda Mwananchi as political activities intensify ahead of the elections.
