Siaya Governor James Orengo has accused certain leaders in Homa Bay County of orchestrating plans to incite violence ahead of the Linda Mwananchi rally scheduled for Sunday, August 16.
Speaking to the press on August 12, Orengo condemned what he described as a deliberate attempt by unnamed Homa Bay politicians to mobilize thugs to disrupt the upcoming political event organised by the Edwin Sifuna faction of the ODM party.
Threats to Constitutional Rights
Orengo emphasized that such actions undermine Kenya’s constitution, which guarantees freedoms including movement, association, expression, and peaceful assembly.
He criticized some Homa Bay leaders for clinging to divisive politics and outdated mindsets, stating, "There are people in Homa Bay living in the past, some leaders. The level of primitiveness and backwardness is coming from the leaders; they don't know we have a new constitution."
The governor warned that politicizing communities in this manner risks sowing conflict and could escalate to genocide.
Personal Threats Amid Rising Tensions
Orengo disclosed that he has been personally targeted, alleging a sitting Member of Parliament publicly called for his elimination without facing repercussions. He did not name the MP.
Despite these threats, Orengo confirmed the rally will proceed as planned, asserting, "We will come to Homa Bay whether they like it or not. We know the plans they are planning."
