Opposition Aims to Unite Behind Single Candidate to Defeat Ruto in 2027 Polls, Says Ndegwa Njiru

Wiper Patriotic Front spokesperson Ndegwa Njiru has revealed that opposition parties are collaborating to present a united front behind a single presidential candidate in the 2027 General Election. The goal is to prevent vote splitting and defeat President William Ruto in the first round.

Speaking during a television interview on August 24, 2026, Njiru emphasized the importance of overcoming the fragmentation that has historically weakened opposition efforts. "We have all political parties on board and all hands on deck," he said, highlighting a shared commitment despite differing party affiliations and presidential ambitions.

Njiru stressed that the opposition is learning from past elections, particularly those in 1992 and 1997, where divisions among opposition leaders undermined their challenge to incumbents. "We do not want to repeat the mistake of the 1992 and the 1997 mistake," he stated.

The Wiper party has already endorsed former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka as its presidential candidate. Njiru noted that other opposition parties are expected to nominate or endorse their candidates before leaders convene to select the consensus flagbearer based on agreed criteria.

He named prominent figures such as Kalonzo Musyoka, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Martha Karua, and Eugene Wamalwa as leaders who have pledged to support the eventual opposition candidate. "There must be only one president, and there can only be one deputy president," Njiru remarked.

Njiru also pointed to the recent Windsor retreat as a significant step toward consolidating opposition unity, aiming to field a candidate capable of challenging President Ruto effectively in the upcoming election.
