During an Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) gathering in Kwale County, a woman openly challenged Mining Cabinet Secretary Hassan Joho over the ongoing broad-based government alliance between ODM and the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
The meeting, attended by CS Joho and Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir, took an unexpected turn when the woman addressed the leaders directly, expressing dissatisfaction with how grassroots ODM supporters were excluded from a recent coalition event in Kwale.
She emphasized the need for local voices to be heard rather than being directed to accept the political arrangement without question. "CS, you are our son, and we love you. You are our kingpin here in Kwale and the coastal region. But we want you to hear us. We do not want to be told to support broad-based government," she stated.
The woman alleged that many local ODM members were turned away from a recent broad-based government meeting in Kwale, questioning the cooperation within the coalition. She also highlighted the economic hardships faced by women and other residents, urging the leaders to consider their struggles in political decisions.
Beyond the coalition critique, she raised concerns about external influence in local leadership races, insisting that Kwale residents should have the authority to choose their gubernatorial candidates.
Addressing CS Joho, she said, "We are sending you to President William Ruto. If the Head of State wants our votes, let him call us. We do not want people to be imposed on us." This message underscores the demand for direct engagement between coastal voters and the President ahead of the 2027 general election.
This incident reflects ongoing tensions within ODM regarding its partnership with the Ruto administration, with some grassroots supporters questioning the benefits of the alliance for ordinary members.
