The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has launched a new SMS notification system to keep applicants informed about the status of their vehicle ownership transfer requests.

This initiative responds to widespread complaints from vehicle owners who previously experienced long delays and lack of updates after submitting their transfer applications and payments.

How the New System Works

  • Applicants will receive real-time updates directly on their mobile phones via SMS.
  • Motorists are encouraged to apply online through the NTSA portal and ensure their registered phone numbers are active to receive timely alerts.
  • The authority aims to process transfer requests within one working day.

Vehicle Ownership Transfer Process

The transfer procedure is fully digital and conducted through the eCitizen portal. Sellers must upload a color PDF of the original logbook, input buyer details, make payment, and accept a consent notification. Buyers then log into their accounts to accept the transfer and submit their information for approval.

Transfer fees depend on the vehicle's engine capacity. Upon approval, new owners are notified to collect their updated logbooks from designated NTSA centers.

Legal Implications of Delayed Transfers

NTSA warns that driving a vehicle still registered under a previous owner's name carries full legal responsibility for any offenses or liabilities incurred. Kenyan law mandates ownership transfer immediately after a sale, with updated logbooks issued within 14 days.

For stalled transfers, affected parties are advised to complete the Alternative Forced Transfer process to regularize vehicle ownership records.
