Mount Elgon MP Fred Kapondi has rejected former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua's claims that security officers recovered 18 firearms and over 3,000 bullets from his residence. Kapondi announced on August 13 that he plans to take legal action against Gachagua for what he described as baseless and reckless accusations.
The allegations surfaced following the killing of Nathan Masai Wasama, a 2027 parliamentary aspirant and former Chesikaki Ward councillor, who was shot dead on August 8 in Bungoma County. Wasama had intended to contest against Kapondi for the Mount Elgon parliamentary seat.
Gachagua's Claims
Speaking in Kajiado on August 12, Gachagua linked Kapondi to Wasama's murder and alleged that a raid on the MP's home uncovered the weapons and ammunition. He also claimed that eight young men were found at the residence and questioned how government firearms could be in the possession of a sitting MP.
Kapondi's Response
Kapondi dismissed these assertions, demanding that Gachagua produce evidence to substantiate his allegations. He challenged the former deputy president to explain the whereabouts of the purported guns and ammunition, stating he would pursue legal proceedings if the claims were not retracted.
He further criticized security agencies for seemingly permitting Gachagua to make serious accusations without proof. Kapondi described Gachagua as acting recklessly and warned that such conduct could destabilize the country.
Ongoing Investigation
The police continue to investigate Wasama's death, with several suspects already detained. Meanwhile, the controversy surrounding the allegations has intensified political tensions ahead of the 2027 elections.
