Kiharu Member of Parliament John Ndindi Nyoro has officially parted ways with the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) to join the United Opposition coalition as leader of the People’s Party of Kenya (PPK).

Announcing his move on August 17, 2026, Nyoro explained that extensive consultations with key opposition figures influenced his decision to reposition politically ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Strategic Consultations With Opposition Leaders

Nyoro revealed that over the past year, he engaged in discussions with prominent leaders including former Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya, former presidential contender Martha Karua, Siaya Governor James Orengo, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, and Dr. Fred Matiang’i.

He emphasized that his political realignment prioritizes the interests of Kenyans, stating, "I have been thinking and praying that in whatever direction I take, politically speaking, the people of Kenya must be the great consideration that I have."

Vision for Kenya’s Future

Drawing from his government experience, Nyoro said he has gained a comprehensive perspective on Kenya’s sectors and identified areas requiring improvement.

He expressed confidence that under new leadership, including PPK, the country can progress beyond previous milestones, urging Kenyans to consider the People’s Party as a viable force in the upcoming elections.

Political Implications

  • Nyoro’s departure signals growing shifts within Kenya’s political landscape ahead of 2027.
  • His leadership of PPK strengthens the United Opposition’s coalition.
  • The move reflects broader dissatisfaction with the ruling UDA party, which Nyoro says he and his supporters have long distanced themselves from.

As the 2027 elections approach, Nyoro’s repositioning underscores the dynamic nature of Kenyan politics and the strategic alliances shaping the race.
