Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma has urged security agencies to arrest and investigate Siaya Governor James Orengo, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, Suba South MP Caroli Omondi, and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna. This follows their alleged involvement in the violent incidents at the Linda Mwananchi rally held on August 16 in Homa Bay.
During a press briefing in Parliament, Kaluma accused the four leaders of orchestrating and financing the unrest, claiming that the opposition caucus received Ksh100 million two days before the rally. "The Ksh100 million was handed over to Governor Orengo on the night of August 14. Authorities must thoroughly investigate this," he stated.
The rally turned violent resulting in two fatalities, numerous injuries, and property damage. Opposition figures, including Babu Owino, countered that their supporters were attacked by unidentified assailants and condemned the violence. Owino highlighted the contrasting peaceful reception of President William Ruto in Migori and cautioned against ethnic incitement between Luos and Kikuyus.
Meanwhile, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has condemned the violence, emphasizing that political events should not be marred by intimidation or attacks. ODM Secretary General Catherine Omanyo called for an impartial probe and insisted that perpetrators be held accountable regardless of political affiliation, while protecting innocent citizens from undue blame.
In a related development, the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) has summoned MP Kaluma to appear on August 19 for investigations related to statements he made during the rally. The commission warned that failure to comply may lead to his arrest.
