Former Trade Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria has accused Nyandarua Governor Moses Kiarie Badilisha of contributing KSh 50 million towards Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) campaigns. Kuria stated this sum sets the financial standard for serious candidates from Mt. Kenya seeking the party's endorsement.
Speaking on August 23, 2026, Kuria alleged that a monetary threshold is the primary qualification for DCP aspirants in the Mt. Kenya region. He contrasted Governor Badilisha's alleged KSh 50 million donation with Murang'a Governor Irungu Kang'ata's KSh 2 million contribution, which Kuria described as insufficient and problematic.
Kuria's remarks included:
- Only candidates meeting the financial threshold are considered for DCP nomination.
- Irungu Kang'ata is facing challenges for his comparatively low contribution.
- Governor Badilisha's donation exemplifies the expected financial commitment.
Additionally, Kuria suggested that former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua's planned trip to the United States serves as a filter to distinguish serious candidates. He argued that aspirants unable to secure a visa and airfare are either naive or not serious contenders.
Gachagua confirmed his intention to travel to the US with his wife for at least two months, citing the need to make decisions away from undue influence by close associates such as Senator John Methu and MP John Kaguchia. He stated:
"When I am here there are a lot of influence from Kaguchia, Methu, and other leaders. I want to make some decisions without undue influence for those I am walking with and I will make the right decision."
Kuria used Gachagua's confirmation to validate his earlier warnings about the US trip and the political dynamics within the Mt. Kenya region.
Since his impeachment as Deputy President in October 2024, Gachagua has remained active in Mt. Kenya politics through the DCP party. The party continues to attract several leaders from the ruling UDA ahead of the 2027 general elections.
