Mombasa Somali Leaders Urge Residents to Register and Vote Locally
Mombasa Somali community leaders call on residents to register and vote in Mombasa to influence local leadership and protect their interests.
Leaders of the Somali community in Mombasa have urged residents to register as voters within the county and participate in local elections rather than travelling to northern Kenya to vote.
Speaking during the opening of Furat Hotel in Mombasa, Senator Mohamed Faki emphasized the importance of voting locally, highlighting that many Somalis live, work, and educate their children in Mombasa. He argued that registering and voting within the county would strengthen the community's influence over decisions affecting their daily lives.
Senator Faki stated:
- “We should not be doing business in Mombasa and then travelling to Garissa or Mandera to vote when elections come.”
- “Registering here protects our interests and helps grow our businesses.”
The call was supported by other Somali community leaders in Mombasa who clarified that the appeal does not discourage voting in northern counties for those with strong ties there. Instead, it encourages those who reside and work in Mombasa to have a direct say in its leadership.
The leaders noted that political participation is vital for communities to have representatives who understand and address their unique needs. This push aligns with broader efforts by political and community groups to boost voter registration ahead of the 2027 General Election.
In recent discussions with Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale, the Mombasa Somali community also highlighted issues affecting them and sought ways to increase their involvement in county affairs.
The community leaders stressed that voting locally is key to ensuring that the interests of Somali families, many of whom run businesses and have established lives in Mombasa, are protected and advanced.
