Elvis Opiyo, the primary suspect in the acid attack on Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) singer Maryclaire, was discovered dead in his Umoja Two residence on August 11, 2026. Authorities suspect suicide as the cause of death.

Opiyo, a security agency driver and father of two, was found lying supine inside his home by his wife. Police from Buruburu, who responded to the scene, noted no visible injuries. Items including a plastic cup, a spoon, and a white substance believed to be poison were found nearby. The body was taken to Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital Mortuary pending a postmortem examination. No suicide note was recovered.

Background of the Acid Attack

Opiyo faced allegations of orchestrating the acid attack by hiring an assailant to target his former lover, Maryclaire, a 24-year-old member of Redemption Ministers Choral Group. The attack occurred on March 17, 2026, near Ngong Road in Kilimani when Maryclaire was doused with corrosive substance while walking home. The incident also affected another woman, both sustaining serious injuries requiring emergency treatment at multiple hospitals.

Police had arrested and charged Opiyo, who was out on bail at the time of his death.

Community and Ministry Reactions

Several SDA music ministries, including Lamb Ministers, Heavenly Echoes Ministers Kenya, and Vocals of Praise, expressed condolences, mourning Opiyo as a brother in Christ and fellow minister despite the allegations. Redemption Ministers, Maryclaire’s group, also conveyed sorrow, acknowledging the complexity of the situation.

Currently, Redemption Ministers Kenya is fundraising through the "Just for Claire Initiative" to raise Sh5 million for Maryclaire’s specialized reconstructive treatment in India, aiming to address her severe acid burn injuries.

Context on Suicide Trends

Authorities note a rise in suicide cases in Kenya, predominantly among men, with contributing factors including depression, financial difficulties, and legal pressures. The government continues to implement measures to tackle this growing concern.

Investigations into Opiyo’s death remain ongoing as police seek to clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident.
