Malawi’s women’s national football team, the Scorchers, have made an impressive run at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) and are now set to face Algeria in the semi-finals on Wednesday at Rabat’s Olympic Stadium, kicking off at 8pm Kenyan time.
This tournament marks Malawi’s debut at WAFCON, and their progress to the last four has already secured them a historic qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, making them only the second Malawian team to reach a FIFA World Cup stage after the men’s Under-17 team in 2009.
The semi-final clash against Algeria, who are also making their first appearance at this stage and have qualified for their first Women’s World Cup, promises to be a tightly contested encounter. Neither team has previously won the WAFCON title, ensuring a new champion will be crowned this year.
Joining the team mid-tournament, Asiminye Simwaka, a dual-sport athlete who recently competed in the Commonwealth Games athletics events, has bolstered the squad’s attacking options. Simwaka replaced the injured Sabina Thom and played a key role in the quarter-final victory over Ghana.
