The upcoming Linda Mwananchi political rally in Homa Bay County has stirred intense political emotions and concerns over potential disruptions, highlighting the region's traditional role as a stronghold of opposition politics.

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has publicly accused senior government officials of planning to disrupt the rally by mobilising groups to attack participants. Speaking at a press conference at the DCP Party headquarters in Nairobi on August 14, 2026, Gachagua urged President William Ruto to intervene and ensure the event proceeds peacefully, reminding the president of his earlier promise to crack down on political violence and arrest those involved.

Meanwhile, ODM National Chairperson Gladys Wanga has moved to counter the rally by encouraging residents in Suba South Constituency, a key area in Homa Bay, to reject the so-called "ODM rebels" organising the event. Wanga criticised Suba South MP Caroli Omondi for allegedly abandoning ODM's principles despite being elected on the party ticket. She expressed surprise over Omondi’s opposition to the government he previously supported and urged voters not to align with any political party Omondi might use to defend his seat.

Other political leaders, including Siaya Governor James Orengo, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, and MP Omondi, have raised alarms about possible attempts to disrupt the rally. Owino warned that such actions could lead to violence and called on the Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, to provide adequate security.

In response, Internal Security Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo assured the organisers and participants of government protection during the rally. He emphasized the right to hold political meetings nationwide but cautioned that all activities must adhere to the law and maintain peace.

The political heat in Homa Bay reflects the broader contest for influence ahead of the 2027 General Election, especially as the region holds significant voter numbers and has historically been a critical opposition base. Political analyst Samuel Owida noted that control of Homa Bay is seen as inheriting the late Raila Odinga’s political legacy, intensifying competition among various factions.

Recent voter registration data indicates a growing electorate in Nyanza counties, including Homa Bay, further raising the stakes for all political players involved.
