Jared Kushner, US President Donald Trump's Middle East envoy, engaged in uncommon discussions with Hamas's new leader, Khalil al-Hayya, in Egypt on Sunday. The talks aimed to promote the implementation of a US-backed peace initiative for Gaza.
The meeting included representatives from the Board of Peace, an international body led by Trump originally focused on Gaza but now addressing global conflicts. Envoys Nickolay Mladenov and former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair also participated, alongside mediators from Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey.
The dialogue centered on concrete steps towards the complete disarmament of Hamas and other armed groups in Gaza, withdrawal of Israeli forces, and humanitarian reconstruction under a civilian Palestinian administration.
Despite these efforts, Israel has rejected the Board of Peace's 15-point plan. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu insists on full Hamas disarmament prior to any troop withdrawal, stating, "The IDF will not carry out any withdrawal until Hamas is genuinely disarmed."
In response, eight Muslim-majority countries, including Egypt, UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Jordan, condemned Israel's refusal, warning it undermines prospects for peace.
The ongoing ceasefire, effective since October 2023, remains fragile amid continued Israeli strikes targeting Hamas militants accused of violating the truce.
Background
- The conflict escalated after a Hamas-led attack on southern Israel in October 2023, resulting in significant casualties and hostages.
- Subsequent Israeli military operations in Gaza have led to over 73,000 deaths, with massive displacement affecting nearly 90% of Gaza's population.
Kushner also met Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi during his visit. Upcoming talks with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu are expected to focus on advancing the US peace plan despite current disagreements.
