The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has acknowledged technical difficulties affecting users of its iTax platform as the August 20, 2026 deadline for Value Added Tax (VAT) submissions nears.
In a statement posted on its X account on August 14, KRA explained that the reported system errors are due to network fluctuations. Taxpayers encountering problems were advised to switch browsers or wait before attempting to file again.
Key advice from KRA includes:
- Using a different internet browser if errors occur
- Ensuring that uploaded VAT return files are properly validated before submission
- Allowing time before retrying if the system is unresponsive
The VAT deadline requires all registered taxpayers to file and pay for transactions conducted in July 2026 by August 20. This latest disruption adds to previous concerns about iTax performance, especially during periods of high traffic.
In June 2026, KRA attributed earlier iTax delays to a surge in users filing income tax returns close to the deadline, assuring that technical teams were working to stabilize the platform.
Promoting Alternative Dispute Resolution
Alongside addressing technical issues, KRA continues to encourage taxpayers involved in disputes with the authority to pursue Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR). Taxpayers are urged to submit the necessary application forms and supporting documents to the Tax Dispute Resolution Office.
KRA emphasized that resolving tax disagreements through dialogue can prevent lengthy formal processes, inviting taxpayers to engage constructively with the authority.
As KRA increasingly depends on digital systems like iTax for tax administration, ensuring the platform’s reliability remains a priority to help taxpayers meet statutory obligations.
